In 1978 the smaller John Deere Spitfire was introduced. This sled was powered by a Kohler 339cc twin engine, which produced 28 HP. However, it's not the engine of which this machine has become famous. Instead, the Spitfire was the first direct-drive snowmobile in history, SnowGoer reports.

#1 · Dec 26, 2006 I am looking to pick up an older sled as a project to mess around with as I find these old classic sleds really interesting. I found a decent John Deere around here for $300 that runs. Its a 78' Spitfire with a Kohler engine. Other than a shredded seat it looks good.
